I do think of my novel in terms of a beginning, middle and end. But I can’t see spending hours on ‘organization’. Whenever I have spent time agonizing over structure, I think I could have been involved with enabling my characters to tell the story. Structure may be important in terms of getting a novel finished; I have never found structure to have a value in crafting a good story.

This will be a great help to me to plot and outline my novel to be. The first draft of my first novel to be, posted on Wattpad, was a disaster. Wrong opening, info dumping in chapter 1, no plot and outline. I stopped writing after 38,000 words. Almost no one reading.

That’s great advice, Kenneth! I completely agree.

Even if you are doing a lot of research to support the story, like a historical novel, you can still draw upon your own experiences, such as emotions and relations.

Really useful way to break plot down. Clear and concise, which helps get to the point with own novel and character arcs! Thank you.

That’s how I am, too. But I keep trying to be more of a plotter. Maybe these tips will help.

I’ve always been a pantser, because my brain just doesn’t work as a plotter. However, these steps made it pretty simple. I’ll be curious to see if it actually helps me write the book.

Hey Katrina! Great point. For a plot with multiple conflicts, catalysts, and so on, I recommend taking our listed “Five Cs” structure and building on it. This might mean that you have multiple points underneath the “Conflict” header. Feel free to make this flexible to whatever works for you! (And please share if you find a system that’s helpful for more complex plots)
